Struggles in Creating a Cohesive Product Line

With a large amount of time available to really sit down and think through my designs, I have been able to be much more productive. I feel as though the quality of each design is getting better, leaving me wondering whether or not to do a complete overhaul of my shop. There are many designs that I am phasing out and replacing with some fresher items. This change is good, I think.
While I love these new items, I still feel as though a cohesive nature of my shop doesn't really exist. I tend to jump around from one thing to the next. I am inspired by so much that I have a hard time sticking to just one concept as a base in my design. Sometimes I wonder if this is a bad thing, but at other times I think it's good because I'm able to offer a variety of products to you all.

If you own a small design business, do you struggle with creating a cohesive feeling within your product line? And to those who are just customers, do you like having a variety of design styles to choose from?

  1. Sometimes I wonder if I'm TOO cohesive! lol... I tend to wonder if all my stuff looks the same, from one client to the next. My sister and I attend many of the same events and fundraisers for which I do a lot of my design work, and she says she can always tell when something in the room is designed by me and when it's not. I mean, I guess that's good that I have a "brand" or a specific style, but at the same time, I'm terrified of falling into a rut! The birthday party invitations that I do ALWAYS keep me on my toes, though! A request for a Ninja Turtles 6th birthday invitation requires a whole different approach from me than a woodland creatures first birthday one - and they certainly require a different approach to designing for my corporate and non-profit clients!

WIth your stuff, I actually CAN see cohesion. I can see your aesthetic shining through from one product to the next. But at the same time, I feel like you have enough variety in your work to keep it interesting. The perfect balance, I think.

  4. I have struggled with this as well - there are SO MANY things I love to make and do!

I think your sales will give you a hint on which direction your shop will go. Many of the items I opened my shop with are fading into the background and probably won't renew.

I am trying to narrow my focus and concentrate more on variations of the items that are selling in my shop.

    Best to you!
